The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when an explosion jolted the residents awake. Startled by the noise, they were immediately alerted to the danger of the persistent barking of their two loyal Chihuahuas. Sensing something amiss, the owners quickly realized that their house was under the threat of a fierce fire that was rapidly spreading.
Neighbours roused by the commotion witnessed the shocking scene unfold before their eyes. As they peered through their windows, they were met with a daunting sight—a sea of orange flames consuming the stricken property. The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service immediately dispatched crews from five stations to the scene at 2:45 am. Firefighters battled relentlessly to control the inferno, which had started in an outbuilding at the rear of the property and quickly spread to the roof of the house. Despite the arduous task and the challenges posed by limited water supply, their valiant efforts paid off, ultimately saving the property from complete destruction.
The house, which had previously been rebuilt after a fire in 2007, has now been left uninhabitable due to the extensive damage caused by the recent blaze. Horses housed in a nearby stable were also successfully rescued, thanks to the combined efforts of the firefighters and a quick-thinking neighbour who assisted in the evacuation.
Station Manager Terry Maher expressed his admiration for the quick actions of the dogs, acknowledging their pivotal role in saving their owners’ lives. He stated, “The owners were alerted to the fire by their dogs barking early this morning. Crews worked incredibly hard, particularly due to the limited water supply, and did a fantastic job saving the property and horses in a nearby stable.”
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and an investigation will be conducted to shed light on the incident. In the meantime, the affected area on Dunmow Road will remain closed as authorities carry out further examinations at the scene.
